Set on the edge of Carterton, Kilkenny Lane Country Park is a fun place to get outdoors with the kids. It’s reached through a housing estate so you just need to keep following the brown signs and know that you are going in the right direction!
There are 2.5km of footpaths which were ideal for pushing my youngest around in his pushchair and a long enough route for my older kids to razz around on their bikes. We really loved stopping off to marvel at the two huge metal shire horse sculptures with their amazing texture.
There’s a really great play park too with lots to keep kids of all ages busy for hours. The most obvious standout when you arrive is the big wooden climbing frame that has a wiggly slide down. If your kids like slides, I’ve got a guide to all the best slides in Oxfordshire.
There’s a great big sandpit too, similar in size to the one at Cuttleslowe Park in Oxford but with the great addition of mini diggers around the edge. Bring your bucket and spade and you might even get to sit down and chill for bit.
There are some great unusual features too which add lots of interest. There are different styles of swings, a willow maze, tunnels and even a totem pole.
There’s an area with small boulders which are great for stepping stones and balancing challenges. Beware though, the spaces around can flood if there’s been a lot of rain. Last time we went we ended up with rather soggy socks!
There’s a small car park that can quickly fill up on a busy day and when it’s sunny you’ll often find the ice cream van there too. They have public toilets too but you need coins, there the ones that you put money in and the door opens and then you really hope you don’t get locked in!
